You will shape the future of computer vision and AI by developing an internationally recognized research line, inspiring the next generation of engineers, and creating meaningful impact through science, education, and internal and external collaborations. The Department of Intelligent Systems at TU Delft is looking for an Assistant or Associate Professor who is excited to advance the field of Computer Vision and Deep Learning through excellent research, inspiring education, and meaningful collaboration.

 

The Computer Vision Lab conducts internationally recognized research on the automatic analysis and interpretation of visual data, including images, video, and 3D/4D sensor data. As part of the Pattern Recognition & Bioinformatics section, you will join a collaborative and interdisciplinary research environment with expertise in computer vision, pattern recognition, machine learning, bioinformatics, deep learning, generative AI, neuromorphic computing, spiking neural networks, and data-driven modelling.

 

You will develop an independent research program with international impact and visibility at the intersection of computer vision, deep learning, and modern AI. Your research may focus on topics such as:

 

  • deep learning for visual perception;
  • representation learning and foundation models for vision;
  • generative models and multimodal AI;
  • self-supervised, weakly supervised, and data-efficient visual learning;
  • 3D, 4D, spatial, embodied, or dynamic vision;
  • neuromorphic computing, event cameras, spiking neural networks;
  • robust, interpretable, trustworthy, or responsible computer vision;
  • vision for science, engineering, health, climate, mobility, robotics, or other high-impact application domains.

 

We are particularly interested in candidates who combine scientific excellence with a strong motivation to engage beyond academia. You will publish high-quality research in internationally recognized venues, secure external funding, and build collaborations with academic, industrial, and public-sector partners to create lasting scientific and societal impact.  We look for a candidate who will contribute to and benefit from TU Delft’s collaborative culture and the Dutch academic landscape. You will position your research within computer vision while connecting it to broader developments in deep learning and artificial intelligence. You will contribute to education in deep learning, machine learning, AI, and specialized computer vision courses, as well as support curriculum development, academic leadership, and mentoring within the department. You will supervise PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, MSc and BSc students, supporting them in their development as independent researchers and professionals.

Job requirements

  • You hold a PhD in Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related discipline.
  • You are able and motivated to build meaningful collaborations with academic, industrial, and societal partners. We value a collaborative mindset and a proactive approach to developing external connections that drive scientific excellence and technological and societal impact.
  • You communicate effectively in an international academic environment and support shared research themes, joint supervision, collective grant initiatives, and a strong departmental community.
  • You have a research record appropriate to your career stage and a clear vision for future research in computer vision and deep learning.
  • You demonstrate the ability to teach deep learning, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and computer vision at university level.
  • You have experience with, or strong potential for, acquiring competitive external research funding.
  • You have experience in supervising, or the clear potential to supervise, PhD candidates and students in an inclusive and supportive manner.
  • For Associate Professor appointment, you demonstrate an established independent research profile, successful funding acquisition, academic leadership, and supervision experience.

Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science 

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three scientific disciplines. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we all use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make completely sustainable and future-proof. At the same time, we are developing the chips and sensors of the future, whilst also setting the foundations for the software technologies to run on this new generation of equipment – which of course includes AI. Meanwhile we are pushing the limits of applied mathematics, for example mapping out disease processes using single cell data, and using mathematics to simulate gigantic ash plumes after a volcanic eruption. In other words: there is plenty of room at the faculty for ground-breaking research. We educate innovative engineers and have excellent labs and facilities that underline our strong international position. In total, more than 1000 employees and 4,000 students work and study in this innovative environment.

Conditions of employment 
This position is offered as an Academic Career Track position  1.0 FTE).

 

Assistant Professor

During the Academic Career Track, we expect you to grow towards an Associate Professor position within a maximum of eight years, for which a position will be available. With other Academic Career Track colleagues, you will participate in the Academic Career Track Development programme, where you are offered ample opportunities to develop yourself in the areas of Education, Research, Societal Impact & Innovation, and Leadership & Organisation. You will regularly discuss your development and results with senior staff based on a personalized development and performance criteria agreed upon at the start of your Academic Career Track. You will start with a temporary contract that will be converted to a permanent contract no later than 12 -18 months after a positive evaluation, based on continuous confidence in your development potential and fit in the organisation. Salary scale 11-12: €4.728,-- to € 7.297,-- per month gross. 

 

Associate Professor

For an Associate Professor position, we offer an initial temporary position with the prospect of a permanent contract. The duration of the temporary position is a maximum of 1 year. After a positive performance assessment, you will be employed in a permanent Associate Professor position. Salary scale 13-14: € 6.512,-- to € 8.673,-- per month gross
 
Inspiring, excellent education is our central aim. We expect you to obtain a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ) within three years if you have less than five years of teaching experience. This is provided by the TU Delft UTQ programme as part of the Academic Career Track Development programme. 
 
TU Delft sets high standards for the English competency of the teaching staff. The TU Delft offers training to improve English competency. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer courses to learn the Dutch language within three years. 
 
Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
