Job description
The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is embarking on a new research direction integrating biomedical research with advanced imaging and precision engineering. With the realization of a new Bio-Optomechatronics Facility we will apply state-of-the-art optical and mechatronic devices in the biomedical field. This facility will bring synergy across multiple ME departments (PME, BMechE, DCSC, MSE) and elevate/generate the research lines within the Health theme. In addition, this will provide direct access to advanced equipment for the analysis of biological samples within the faculty, which was previously out of reach. We are looking for a bio technician who is open and able to share knowledge and skills in supporting the researchers and students across, specifically, guaranteeing the biosafety for the researchers and environment, the maintenance of equipment and materials.
Responsibilities
In short, the Biolab technician will:
- Be first contact point when it comes to lab safety and lab support of the Bio-Optomechatronics lab.
- Coordinate ongoing ML1 activities in the lab.
- Support research and education activities in facility.
- Maintain equipment, stock and resources, and assist in ordering laboratory supplies.
- Give safety training and instructions, ensure that all safety guidelines are followed, and maintain a clean and orderly environment.
- Be the responsible one for the physical lab space use (schedule/planning).
Job requirements
- You have a degree in cell biology or similar field, minimal HBO level with at least 2 years work experience in a ML1 or higher biosafety level lab, or WO at a laboratory. Work experience in one or more of the following fields and corresponding techniques is an advantage: Biology and medical laboratory research or Biotechnology WO, Biomedical Sciences, Life Science and Technologies, Bio pharmaceutical sciences.
- You are familiar and trained in cell biological protocols and like to train students to obtain these skills.
- You are curious, dedicated, open, proactive and ambitious.
- You like inter disciplinary work environment (including engineers and physicists), and you are a good team player.
- You like to work in a team of technicians and international researchers and have affinity with guiding students during their (graduation) internship.
- The prospect of further developing yourself in laboratory work and doing practical research in the field of (biological) materials appeals to you very much.
- You are prepared to obtain both the required BHV and first aid (EHBO) certificate.
- Experience with immunofluorescence confocal microscopy setups.

Conditions of employment
- Duration of contract is 18 months Temporary
- A job of 38-40 hours per week.
- Temporary contract for 18 months (0.8-1.0 FTE). Approximate salary scale 9-10 depending on qualifications and experience. Starting date 1/7/2025.
