Engineering Doctorate (EngD), Sustainable Wind Powered Desalination for Drinking Water Production

Wind Powered Seawater Desalination for sustainable drinking water production. Elevate your technical expertise and design skills in the EngD programme at TU Delft.

Job description

At the forefront of tackling two of the most pressing global challenges—water scarcity and the transition to renewable energy—DOT, Delft Offshore Turbine, is driving innovative, sustainable solutions. With the rapid expansion of offshore wind farms, there is a critical need for alternatives to traditional electrical carriers. Combining Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO), i.e. desalination, with wind energy is one of the solutions, significantly reducing the CO2 footprint of conventional desalination processes while providing fresh (drinking) water. DOT has pioneered a unique pump technology that enables wind turbines to directly pressurize water, eliminating the intermediate step of electricity generation. This pressurized water is then utilized to power SWRO installations for desalination. However, a key technical challenge remains: managing the variability of wind power while ensuring a reliable supply of fresh (drinking) water.

The EngD candidate will work closely with DOT and will design, implement, and test innovative solutions that address wind variability while procucing a constant flow of fresh water at the right pressures for water transport. The role also involves conducting risk assessments, asset management planning, and techno-economic evaluations to assess the feasibility of the proposed solutions.

The candidate will combine theoretical knowledge, supported by the educational programme of the EngD, with professional experience and apply it to pilot installations inside and outside the Netherlands. Alongside scientific research, the candidate will collaborate with partners to identify operational needs and implement prototypes of the developed solutions. Regular site visits to partner locations will be part of the project.

Conditions of employment

Would you like to deepen your technical competence, gain applied experience with a small team who is busy rolling out water solutions to make big impacts on water shortage (and flooding) challenges while taking your education to the next level with an Engineering Doctorate (EngD) accreditation? The Civil Engineering and Geosciences Faculty of Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) offers you a program where you will solve a practical, integrative and complex problem in cooperation with a company in the private sector. You study, on average, two days per week at the TU Delft, following dedicated courses, and apply your learning three days per week on the project in practice.

The candidate will be appointed at TU Delft, offering a 2-year contract (starting in September 2025), with an official go/no go progress assessment after one year. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, based on scale TOIO and equivalent to those of a doctoral candidate. In the first year, you'll receive a gross monthly salary of approx. €2770, increasing to a maximum of €3.226 in the second year.

The TU Delft offers a customisable compensation package, discounts on health insurance, and a monthly work costs contribution. Flexible work schedules can be arranged.
