Technician at Department Quantum Nanoscience
Are you a hands-on, versatile technician who gets excited about working at the heart of scientific research? Then this could be the perfect job for you!
Job description
We offer a position in which you will support researchers and students in designing, optimizing, troubleshooting, and maintaining research setups and experimental equipment. You understand the needs of our scientists and are committed to providing an optimal technical solution or infrastructure. You will work closely with a small team of fellow technicians, colleagues from TU Delft Contract and Real Estate, and specialists from our mechanical workshop.
Within the Department of Quantum Nanoscience, we operate a variety of laboratories equipped with a wide range of complex instruments, including different types of microscopes, lasers, magnets, and wet and dry cryostats.
In addition to providing technical support to these diverse research groups, you will face another major challenge in this role: in 2028, our entire department will move to a new building. This is a significant project in which you, as a technician, will play a key role.
In preparation for this relocation, you will coordinate with the scientific staff of the department to:
- Develop timelines with priorities and key points of attention for each laboratory.
- Create and maintain an overview of laboratory equipment and its specifications.
- Assess which equipment can be relocated and which should be replaced.
- Develop relocation and replacement plans.
You will balance competing interests, assess departmental requirements against the design and capabilities of the new facility, and provide both solicited and unsolicited advice to departmental management.
Alongside these more project-oriented responsibilities, the department has an interest in hands-on support in the following core areas of expertise:
- Vacuum technology — pumps, leak detection, vacuum components, evacuation systems
- Electronics and electrical engineering — electronic circuits, troubleshooting, power supplies, instrumentation, wiring
- Laboratory infrastructure and facilities — electrical infrastructure, cooling water, compressed gases, ventilation, HVAC/climate control
Would you like to get an impression of the research conducted within our department? Take a look at the following videos showcasing some of our quantum research activities.
Job requirements
- You have a higher professional or academic degree (HBO/WO) in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, Laboratory Technology, Cryogenic Engineering or a related field, or an MBO qualification supplemented with relevant work experience.
- You have knowledge and hands-on experience in at least one of the core areas of expertise described above. You are comfortable working in an international environment and can communicate fluently in Dutch and English with researchers, students, colleagues, and suppliers.
- You maintain a professional attitude and demonstrate this in both your work and interactions with others.
- You thrive in a dynamic environment where priorities can change rapidly, and creative solutions are often required.
- You prioritize safety first, including willingness to attend training courses to maintain or further develop your knowledge in areas such as laser safety, working with chemicals, and related topics.
- Possession of, or willingness to obtain, a First Aid and Emergency Response (BHV) certificate.
